Not yet. You get a clean, accurate text translation you can copy, edit or download; layout-faithful translated PDFs are on the roadmap. We'd rather give you precise text than a broken imitation of your layout.

Is it safe to translate confidential or legal PDF documents?

Your PDF file is never uploaded — it is opened and read inside your browser. Translation is the one place Kameleo cannot be fully on-device: a language model can't run in a browser, so the extracted text (never the file) is sent to our AI endpoint, which does not store it and never uses it to train a model. That is a concrete difference from free public engines — DeepL's free tier reserves the right to store your content perpetually and train on it, and its terms forbid personal data outright. You can watch exactly what is sent in your browser's Network tab. If your material is so sensitive that even the text must not leave the machine, use the on-device tools and skip AI translation — we would rather tell you that than pretend.

Can I translate scanned PDF documents or images?

Yes. A scanned PDF is images with no text layer, so there is nothing to extract directly. Run our OCR tool first — it recognises the text on your device — then translate the result.

Is there a character or page limit for free AI translation?

Yes — up to 20,000 characters per translation (roughly 8–10 pages of text) and 10 AI tasks a day on the free plan. Unlike the on-device tools, AI translation runs on a model we pay for, which is what the limit is for.
