Password Protect a PDF Online — Free & Private

How to password-protect a PDF

  1. Drop your PDF — it opens locally, nothing is uploaded.
  2. Type an open password (and choose whether printing or copying stays allowed).
  3. Click Protect and download the encrypted PDF. The password is set in your browser — we never see it.

Frequently asked questions

Is the encryption real?

Yes — Kameleo applies genuine AES PDF encryption in your browser. Anyone opening the file will be asked for the password.

Can you recover my password if I forget it?

No. The password is never sent to us — it's applied entirely on your device — so there is nothing for us to recover. Keep it somewhere safe.

Is my file uploaded to encrypt it?

Never. Both the file and the password stay in your browser; you can confirm in the Network tab.

What's the difference between the open password and restrictions?

The open password is required to view the file at all. Restrictions (printing, copying) limit what a reader can do after opening — you choose those with the toggles.
